Hey Freelancer ,

This week, we're talking to anyone who’s ever stared out a conference room window wondering, “Is this really it?”

If you’re in a traditional 9–5—or recently left one, you’ve probably felt that tug. The one pulling you toward more freedom, flexibility, and fulfillment.

And freelancing? It’s calling your name.

Here are 4 things you must know if you're thinking about leaving corporate and going freelance:

1. You Don’t Have to Quit Cold Turkey

Start freelancing on the side. Nights. Weekends. During your lunch break. The goal is to validate your skillset in the market and gain real-world experience with low risk.

  • Pick 1–2 high-demand services you can offer (writing, design, marketing, consulting, etc.)

  • Set up a profile on Upwork or Fiverr

  • Or reach out to your personal network—quietly

2. Focus on Building a Personal Brand

You don’t need a fancy logo or website. But you do need a story. Clients want to know who you are, why you’re different, and what results you can deliver.

Start with:

  • A strong LinkedIn profile

  • A simple portfolio (Notion, Google Drive, or Carrd is enough)

  • Content that shows your personality and skills

3. Learn to Love the Business Side

Freelancing is freedom, yes—but it’s also invoices, proposals, client calls, contracts, and taxes.
Don’t let that scare you—embrace it.

  • Use tools like Honeybook, Bonsai, or Wave to manage admin

  • Learn basic sales skills (not sleazy ones—just connection-driven conversations)

  • Know your numbers—income goals, rates, and what it takes to go full-time

4. Your Network Is Your Secret Weapon

Most first-time freelancers don’t realize how much gold is already in their network.
Former coworkers. Managers. Friends. Alumni. That guy you met at the conference two years ago.

👉 Tell people what you’re doing and how they can help. One well-timed referral can change everything.

You were not born to just pay bills and die. – Unknown

This Week’s Challenge

Write and share your “I’m freelancing now” post on LinkedIn. (Yes, really). Even if you’re still in a full-time job, craft a soft-launch post that says:

  • Who you help

  • What you do

  • How people can get in touch

Not ready to go public? DM 3 people in your network who could send you referrals. The sooner people know, the sooner you grow.

See you next Friday,
Michael Fleischner
